 Bravo Chicago Symphony !!!!!!

I just heard a radio broadcast of a recent live performance from early December of Mahler's 1st Symphony conducted by Zweden that pretty much knocked me off my feet! I tuned in after the initial bars so I had to listen just to find out who it was and every bar was AMAZING. I stayed for the conducting but the clarinet playing was incredible as well - best section playing I've ever heard in this work.

I gotta tell you, after the Pierre Boulez Mahler from last year this sounds like an entirely different orchestra.

Is there any way you guys could appoint Zweden the music director????

GREAT !!!!!

I heard Berlin Phil play Mahler 1 with Simon Rattle in the Sydney Opera House in November 2010. It remains to this day the best musical experience I've ever had.

Chicago is awesome too! Go the clarinets :)

Paul, I don't comprehend your message. The CSO is led by Muti, I thought.

Muti is Chicago Symph Music Director. Paul is talking about a concert conducted by guest Jaap van Zweden.

An entire podcast, that will be available from last monday trough six weeks, is at:

All the best,

It's absolutely thrilling! Amazing performance by the CSO!
This is the best performance of Mahler's 1st Symphonoy I've heard, it's simply captivating from the opening bar right to the end. Amazing players and Zweden has worked magic with this symphony!

Jaap van Zweden is a Dutch conductor. He was chief conductor from 2000-2005 of the Residentie Orchestra in The Hague, Holland, where I played the clarinet at the time. Presently he is music director of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. And he was awarded Conductor of the Year 2012 in the USA. Underneath you will find the link to his website.

Hey Brian L - This was probably my 2nd favorite performance of Mahler 1. I honestly think the inaugural concert by Gustavo Dudamel and the LA Phil was better. I can't find a better performance than that one. To each their own of course, but you should give that one a listen to!!
