News on the NYC Broadway Show strike!
Author: John J. Moses
Date:   2007-11-13 18:22

Hi Friends:

Please check my website for the latest developments in the current Broadway Show Strike.

I'm trying the keep the spirits high among all of us on Broadway who are now out of work. The Stagehands Union initiated the strike, but we at Local 802 in NYC, and the actors at Actor's Equity, are all in sympathy with the stagehands.

So we are all out on the streets, talking to people and ticket holders, trying to explain, as best we can, why this strike has crippled Broadway.

It is indeed a sad day on the "Great White Way."

I am in sympathy with all workers who feel the only way to negotiate fair contracts and working conditions is to strike. However, JJM look on the bright side--being away from WICKED may give you a little extra time to drag out that old Baermann book and.........well, it was just a thought.

Seriously, good luck from an AFM Local 166 Life Member to you and all my Broadway musical brothers & sisters for a timely and positive resolution of all the contractual issues on the table. Solidarity!!!

Hope this little Flight Of The Bumblebee Clarinet Video on my brand new YouTube Page:

http://www.youtube.com/arkadymusic

will help in the spirits department, and makes a fun HELLO TO ALL on this website:)!

I assume that here in the US Flight Of The Bumblebee is a "standard", just like it's always been in Russia, clarinet, or not:)!

This site here looks like a great resource, which I am looking forward to exploring! (I just Subscribed)

Watching Macy's Thankgiving Day Parade which always includes cast performances, did the union members on strick make special concessions so these parade performances could be produced? And do the musicians playing on the soundtracks receive residual compensation?? Actors??? Techical support personall???? Just a local AMF musician (Life) and former WEA/NEA/MTI union(s) member wondering.........

NYC UNION SOLIDARITY--may we in the "heartland" experiance some trickle effect.

William, my research indicates that Mr. Moses WROTE Baermann
(Sorry John, couldnt resist).

OTOH, does the strike extend to Opera and Symph. venues??

First of all, we, the musicians of Local 802 NYC AF of M, are not, I repeat, on strike, we all have been "laid-off" by our Theater owners (aka The League). We are, of course, in sympathy with our Local 1 Stagehands, who are, in fact, on strike over their long overdue contract. See my website for more details.

The Macy's Parade was contracted many months ago, and was not affected by the current 2 1/2 week Broadway show shutdown still on-going.

As far as the "residuals" issue you raise, you'll have to contact you own Local to see what provisions their contracts had in them for any repayments to be made to those involved.

Local 802 in NYC had all contract provisions in place before the Broadway shutdown happened, so I would suspect all proper payments were made to those involved.

Why do you ask? Were you involved in any of the pre-records used at the parade? Or just curious?

Allan, I did, if fact, help Baermann with those difficult clarinet studies. It took us three or four days just to play through the proofs.

I'm glad that's over...! Did you enjoy the studies?

Not involved, but as a union member, just curious about how things are run in the "big apple". With all of the stage hands and writers on strick or in negotiations, I simply was wondering how these Macy Parade productions were made possible and if the artists involved, either on screen or "behind" via recordings, were receiving their due compensation. Just a simple inquery, considering that so many shows are dark and most late night talks shows are in reruns.

I hope it gets settled soon and fairly. I know what it is to be one strike, have done it far too many times in my career. It's not fun either way. Good luck John. ESP eddiesclarinet.com

What's really sad about this strike is that the musicians have to suffer too and of course can't cross the picket line. Union people have to stick together. But the saddest part for the musicians is that after it's settled the theater's will soon after demand having less live musicians in the pits because of their increased expenses, just wait until the next musicians contract is up.
