Hello,
I have found that the way I perceive my sound and how I actually sound are quite different. I was wondering if there are recommended microphones or other devices to record my practice sessions so that I may listen back to them. I have seen numerous posts about the zoom h2 and h4, but I was hoping another cheaper option may be available. A good quality mic to record through my macbook perhaps? Any other suggestions would be welcome as well.
I do play both clarinet and bass clarinet, so something able to capture the lower tones is necessary.

I would also be very interested to hear of something like this, but I think you will be hard pressed to find a good quality mic for less than either zooms. . .

I have used a "Blue Snowball" mic to do some recording and it has pretty good sound quality. Although it's more like a microphone than the Zooms, it can plug into a computer via USB directly to Pro-Tools/Garage Band etc.
I also plugged it directly into my iPad using a special adapter which recorded it into it to plug into my iPad with Garage Band, so with your Macbook, it would work great.
The price is about AU$100 which is a bit cheaper. Comparing to a Zoomn H4 that I used, I think the Zoom was better for large room recording, for performances etc. as it could give the full stereo but the Snowball was very good in smaller spaces bedrooms/studios etc.
The Size of the snowball doesn't make it as portable as the Zooms but it comes with a little stand, so you can place it on a desk, music stand, chair etc.

The Zoom H1 is hardly more expensive than a good microphone, and can also be used to record rehearsals etc as it easily fits into most cases.
(don't dismiss the H1 as just being the "cheap brother" of the H2 or the H4 - it's a very good and easy to operate recorder)

Agreed about the Zoom H1: I'm very impressed with mine. Things I've read imply that it is cheaper more because the controls are rather rudimentary, rather than it yielding inferior sound quality compared to the H2 etc. That's fine by me: I just want something to get a source onto a computer easily - so simple controls are a bonus if anything.

A note:
I have a Zoom H2. It works ok -nearly instant writing to the chip. You need a bigger chip, as MP3 gives you only about a minute per megabyte.
Recording your practice easily doubles your practice time, since you do have to listen to as much as you play. For me, that's expensive.

Try the Logitech Desktop USB mike. It lists for $30 but I've seen them online for under $10. It works well for recording the clarinet (GarageBand) and yields an reasonably accurate, somewhat warm likeness. Point it at the middle joint when recording.
