 Clarinet Case
Author: Evans

Does anyone know what kind of wood would be best for making a clarinet case. I've thought of a few so far, they are Sugar Maple, American Beech, European Beech, White Oak, and possibly Plum. There is also a chance that I will want to stain it. Also, what fabric would be good for the interior.

Thanks, Evan

I've used both stretch crushed velvet and regular velvet for relining cases. The stretch velvet is easier to shape with. I use 'power grab' to adhere it with.

Anyone in need of a used buffet double case? I just got a new one with the new A clarinet. The case is for an A and Bb. It needs a new home.

No charge, first to respond gets it. From 1 to 10, 10 being new this is about a 6 on the outside and a 7 to an 8 inside. No weird smells, such as from old cases sitting around for 50 years. Everything works, hinges, buttons, whatever. I can only ship in the US because of postage fees, I'm paying for that too! : )

I second Chris P's excellent suggestion of marine ply — strong, thin, and stable. I'd be wary of using oak (and to a lesser extent beech) because moisture issues in the case could cause the wood to change shape and stress your fastenings.

I've never made the exterior of a case from scratch, but for re-lining old cases, I've used both cotton velveteen and crushed velvet. The velvet wasn't sold as a sretch cloth, but it does stretch, and I find it easier to work with. I like it in those strong old Bundy cases. The cotton velveteen, with its smoother, duller finish, looks better to me in cases I've made from old briefcases covered in smooth brown or tan leather. Both fabrics come in lots of good colors and have made satisfactory case liners.

Thanks, what do you think about plum? Teak?

I'd stay clear of tropical wood unless it's from a sustainable production. On the other hand there are enough local products that are suited as well. I'm just sayin'...

Personally I'd go for cabinet grade plywood.

Plum is handsome but unless you're using veneers I don't think it's stable enough, unless you want to use it in ¾" thickness — and hire help to carry the case around! You can get marine grade plywood with a teak veneer — it's a very stable wood but I still think as solid wood it might be too heavy for a case. Since you won't need more than a few square feet you could visit a local cabinet shop or maybe a boatyard and get scraps of plywood for this project.
