Mouthpiece for Conn Director

The clarinet I am using is an old Conn Director 17. I really like this horn, mostly because my friend in community band is lending it to me. He is an older fellow, who I haven't seen in awhile due to him having knee surgery. He was the only one to lend me a horn when my plastic clarinets were no longer of playable quality, and I had no money to get them fixed.

The mouthpiece I am currently using is an old Selmer Goldentone with a inverted ligature of some sort made of cloth I think. The mouth piece has a small chip in the tip on the left and is worn down quite a bit. I was wondering if I should get it refaced or just buy a new mouthpiece. If I should buy a new one, which ones should I try?

I'm an amateur, but fwiw.... I've kept a 1957 Conn Director (wood) that was my first clarinet. The worst mouthpiece I've ever tried on the Conn is the original Conn mouthpiece that came with it. Unfortunately, I didn't know any better at the time and played on that hunk-o-junk mouthpiece for more than nine years. So IMHO there's no percentage in trying to find an original mouthpiece.

A modern Hite Premiere (inexpensive student mouthpiece) makes a major improvement, if you like a free-blowing mouthpiece for band or jazz. If you prefer a somewhat more resistant, classical mouthpice, I like the Selmer HS* mouthiece with this clarinet.

I actually might buy two of those Hites just to have them. I could use them very well in church, because I use a Vandoren 3 reed to get a different sound than I do in concert band, and they seem to made for just that reed. My Gonzalez 3.5's would be much too strong for it. As for the HS* I'm pretty sure I can find one of those for real cheap. This is turning out better than I thought :D

Any ligature preferences? I have a D. Bonade my band director gave me. I usually use it on my plastic clarinets.

;-)

I'm a bad person to give advice about ligatures, because I'm less particular about them than most people seem to be. I used the ordinary 2-screw metal ligature that came with the Conn clarinet. If you prefer a Bonade most of the time, then that's probably going to work better for you.

I don't usually care about my lig, as long as it's inverted. The Bonade was my first, and when i started using it I found myself playing at a better angle and didn't have to worry about any screws on my chin. I think you should maybe search for a Bonade, just to see how it is
