What other makes or instrument types do you regularly see wrongly spelt in classified/auction listings?

Tenner saxaphone is an all-time classic, especially if it's 'sort after' (unless it's a 'right off').

The inevitable and infamous Buffet Crampton is one I come across regularly, along with LaBlanc ((sigh)).
I too have seen Buffet Champion a couple times.

"Cousenon" or "Cousnon" rather than the correct "Couesnon". I once saw a "Semler" advertised. Many mouthpieces have been identified as "Leo Bundy" rather than "Geo. Bundy".

I forgot one that even fooled me for a while: the logo on the bell of the Boosey & Hawkes clarinet and sax models called "The Edgware", because the odd squarish font they used looks like "The Fogware" when the logo is a bit worn.

I've got two Fogwares and 3 Edgwares, acording to the sellers anyway! Just got a Malverne Standard too. I think the Leo Bundy mouthpieces play a little 'brighter' than the Geo Bundy models.

My favourite is still (in a french auction) an instrument sold "en condition menthe" (i.e. "in mint condition").

Currently there are two "Bundy Selma 11" instruments out there...
"SLM" gets a few hits as well...

Given some of the quality control issues (especially with "their" E-11), why not call them "Buffet Crapshoot?" [rotate]

The one that gets me most is LeBlanc. The B is not supposed to be capitalized.
It's almost as annoying as talking about reed "sizes." [hot]

Ah, the famous Pennzoil. That's the one where you have to use 30-weight instead of cork grease.

Some of those misspellings are deliberate. At flea markets and junktiques stores, I occasionally see clarinets labelled (permanently, on the instruments and cases, not just in ads) "Selner" and "Baffet." These are imported, cheap, plastic clarinets, with logos clearly meant to deceive.

The B in Leblanc is not supposed to be capitalized? Heh, that one even got me for a while there. I see it capitalized very frequently online, it's extraordinarily confusing.

Anyone remember those Norblet paris clarinets? >.>

I haven't seen any "Norblet" clarinets, but have seen quite a few "Noble" clarinets advertised on TIIASWNSNBM.

Still trying to sort out the confusion over LaMargue and LaMarque, both of which I've seen on the same auction site -- don't know if these are from the same maker, and if so, which is the correct spelling. I even once had one of these instruments but the logo was worn and with the font they used it was hard to distinguish a "g" from a "q".

Hmm. Interesting and possibly tongue-in-cheek choice of a company name, if LaMarque is right. By international treaty, England and most of Europe, with the exception of Spain, outlawed privateering in 1856, but before that, La Marque was the letter a privateer obtained from the government for purposes of posing as a legitimate businessman. Henry Morgan and Edward "Black Bart" Teach held Letters of Marque from England, for instance, until they got busted as plain old pirates. Of course, a cynical person might say that the definition of abusing a Letter of Marque mostly had to do with failing to turn over the requisite portion of the booty to bribe certain high-level officials, oops, I mean pay the taxes.

Ben, thanx for posting that handsome Napoleonic document!

>>I wonder if Somalia ever signed that treaty... >

Pirates who claimed they were privateers operated with enthusiasm from both coasts of Africa at the time. I don't recall who then governed the area that's now modern Somalia, but the treaty did obligate colonial powers to enforce it in their colonies.

The United States of America didn't sign that treaty, by the way. Privateering by the old definitions remained legal here until 1908, when the U.S.A. signed the 1907 Hague Convention. Among other things, that convention defined governments' right to hire private contractors to assist in war and maritime law enforcement efforts (as the U.S.A. has done in Iraq and Afghanistan, for instance), so in a sense, privateering continues.

Well, sorry about hijacking the thread. I think if the makers of "LaMarque" clarinets meant to make a piracy joke, it must have been a cross-reference to the other kind of piracy: trademark violations, mislabelling and so forth.

Lelia, your history of piracy and privateering is all very interesting [grin], but somehow I think that the explanation of "LaMarque" is probably much simpler and more innocent, probably along the lines of the literal translation "The Brand".

No doubt you're right. I've had to do some research on privateering for something I'm writing and pirates have hijacked my brain.

chris moffat saw a listing that said,
>>"clarinet has no markings; name on lyre is 'Depose France'".
>>

I love it! Reminds me of an incident on the TV program, "Antiques Roadshow," when an owner brought in a violin with a Stradivarius label. This owner thought that "Fac. Anno 1720" (or whatever the date was) really said, "Fac. Anna" -- and that it meant Stradivarius had dedicated this violin to his wife, Anna. And that made it especially valuable. The violin was the usual German student-quality copy with a fake label.

Here are a couple more:

"the auction site that must not be named" for eBay (found here rather than in auction listings).

and

effer (which would be a clarinet in F, perhaps a basset horn?) for eefer.

(though I must admit there are times that I refer to my eefer as "that little effer" but I'm not thinking about its key then. :) )

Indeed, "saxaphone" is so common that even some people who play the sax spell the word that way.

One of the most common typos is "clarient." I'm guilty of that one if I'm not careful. Another common typo: "clairnet." Misspelling common at flea markets and on auction tags: "claranet."
