Hi everybody,
I know literally nothing about Clarinets. :(
Basically, to cut to the point, I have a Martin Handcraft Paris Clarinet, and I have no idea how much it's worth, whether Martin is a good name or anything. A friend who DOES know about Clarinets said it needs recorking...no problem - I'm just wondering if anyone knows anything about them, and ANY info you could give would be great! :D
Many Thanks,
MartinClarinet_NoIDEA!! :D

I'm sure it's a stencil clarinet, but who made it is another story. Some of us might be able to identify the maker if you could post some pictures. I don't remember ever seeing a "Handcraft" clarinet. You can do a search for Martin Handcraft saxophones on the internet and come up with a lot of material.....not so for the clarinets.

I have a Martin Handcraft *metal* clarinet which is definitely a Bettoney stencil -- it is in all ways a Boston Wonder, except for the markings -- and have seen pictures of a Martin Handcraft metal clarinet that was apparently a Pedler stencil.
('Stencil' essentially means that it was made by a different company than the one whose mark it bears.)
I assume your clarinet is wood. If you posted pictures maybe somebody here would recognize some distinguishing features and could determine who made it. I think the "Handcraft" name dates it to before WW2.

I also have a Martin Handcraft Foreign - - bought in the UK. I have not been able to find any information about it.
If you have made any discoveries I would love to hear what you've found out.

Martin did make metal clarinets but as far as I know they were all sold under the Pedler brand (Pedler was bought by Martin after Harry Pedler retired). It's possible that they may have sold them under the Martin name for export but I've never encountered one marked as such.
I have a both a Pedler & Co metal clarinet as well as a Martin Handcraft tenor sax. When comparing the two you can see some similarities in the tone hole designs. The clarinet and sax both use beveled tone hole chimneys that are soldered onto the body as Martin instruments are known for.
The Pedler metal clarinet is well constructed but is a rather unremarkable player. Kind of disappointing as my Martin sax is a fantastic player and gave me high hopes for the clarinet.
