 Zinner mouthpiece types
Author: skennedy

I think I've noticed some differences between Zinner mouthpieces with one line up and one line down vs. one line up and two lines down. What are the differences? Is it a sloped sides thing instead of a parallel sides thing or are my eyes playing tricks?
Thanks.

As far as i remember- one line means it's an "E" style blank, with a flatter baffle (less curve from left to right, and less curve length ways) and two lines (well, three in total) means it's an "A" style blank (not to be confused with the "A frame" blank which has angled side walls at the throat). The "A" blank, i believe the most popular, has a concave baffle (slightly more curve from left to right and more curve lengthways than the E)
this is based on observations from around 1998 to 2003 (when i stopped refacing mouthpieces on a regular basis) so may have no bearing on what is currently available.

Steve,

Your eyes are not playing any tricks. This is Zinner #362 Bb clarinet blank. Parallel sidewalls, "higher baffle". In comparison; the #361 Bb clarinet blank has parallel sidewalls, "deep baffle". Side to side concavity on both blanks is the same but the finished product might have more or less concavity. This is up to the maker. I usually shape the tip to the traditional rounder profile, so the upper baffle is reshaped and has more side to side concavity.

I concur with Vytas re "side to side concavity", he is correct. The designations 362= E blank and 361= A blank were used when these blanks became available from IMS, and it may be that this designation did not originate from Zinner and not used anymore but was in usage in the period of time i mention above.
