I had a similar thought to Ed. Pulling at the barrel is NOT hard. These barrels sound significantly worse than stock barrels.
I'm not sure what emergency would call for "instantly sounding worse by changing to inferior equipment".

The only reason I play one is because it's shorter than my normal barrel. I play with an accordionist who's tuned (depending on which accordion she's on) at 442-444.
I can't always wait half an hour to get warm enough to play that high.

its not the playing flatter part that was handy-it was the ability to play quite a bit sharper than was handy about them. say you got to a german band gig {think late october} only to find the gig has been moved outdoors! you need to play sharper "at least till it warms up'. these were very handy to have in your case for just this type of tunning emergancy.

They sounded just fine. In the mix of reeds, mouthpieces, ligs, clarinet brands and the clarinetist themselves it becomes less of an issue tonally than what you might expect from just comparing barrels by themselves. IMO they could be used in every major orchestra without diminishing the tonal product.

Check out the Paulus & Schuler Z-Birne. (You extend the barrel by rotating the ring).

Every professional orchestral clarinetist that I know uses an after market barrels and I've never heard of any that use a "click" barrel. Maybe it's just me but I know a whole bunch of pro orchestra players. ESP

my click barrel has a large bore, perfect for a CT. But tonally i wouldn't venture putting it on my R13. I've used it in emergencies when I misplaced my CT barrel in a different case.
they are an interesting concept though and do get quite short. As you extend it you basically end up with a large bore and a larger bore .. probably perfect for a CT/1010 hybrid clarinet =-)
