William, somehow I don't think they will let the bass clarinetist of the BSO accept the award but if they do I'll be sure to mention and give thanks to our clarinet bboard. ESP

I can see it now. Ed walks up to accept, and Kanye West rushes out and says,
"Ima letchu finish, but .... was the greatest classical album of all time."

Don't worry Dixie, if that happens again, I'm sure that Beyonce will give EP a second chance to let the BSO have it's at the mike.

I wouldn't worry about Kanye, it would be a shame to damage a good contra.

I don't own a contra, I'll have to hit with my Eb clarinet, it's makes a nice wacker and I can sneak it in under my tux. ESP

And I'm sure they wouldn't stop you for carrying that around, even though it can very easily be called a lethal weapon, especially to the flutists sitting in front of you!

We didn't win so I didn't have to collect the award. Always a bridesmaid never a bride. I was already to fly in to receive it too. Oh well, next year. We have won a few over the years. Our conductor won one with the London Philharmonic, the traitor. I'll guess I'll have to practice harder. ESP

So sorry, ED--and I managed to stay awake through the whole show waiting for your "moment". Alas, there's always next year. However, personally, I would not be willing to take the whole blame for not winning--"guess I'll have to practice harder"--but would attempt to spread the blame among the inner strings where the real slacker's tend to hide out (lol).

When I'm playing with the nearby opera company, I usually carpool with a violist from the neighborhood. If anyone asks, I tell them it's so I can park in the handicapped spots.

Sorry to hear that, Ed. Who won, by the way? I think the DSO or Slatkin were up for an award, but I tend not to watch the show, as there's so much other garbage to wade through, and real music gets the short end of the stick.

I can't say the Pro Bowl was any more edifying, with everybody dogging it (not that I blame them for avoiding injury in a non-season, non-playoff game), but I was sorry to read this morning that Baltimore didn't win. I hope the nomination means better record sales.

Classical orchestral grammies are a bit of a joke; the number of NARAS members who are knowledgeable in this category is not very large. In some past years the Atlanta Symphony won grammies for almost everything they recorded. Why? ASO members were encouraged to join NARAS, and of course they voted as a bloc for their own recordings. I'm not implying that some of the recordings weren't very good.
Eddie, if you want the hardware for your trophy case, just enlist all your friends and colleagues to join NARAS (actually worth the money for the fantastic discounts you get for all of the new CD's) and get them to vote for you!

Thank you for all the good humor and support. No one actually asked what recording the BSO was up for so I'll tell you all now. It was a recording of the Bernstein Mass. It was a hugh undertaking because it included a vocal soloist, several choruses called "street" people who act and sing their parts in the live performance and the Morgan University Choir. A cast of thousands, well hundreds anyway. We did the staged version last year three times in Baltimore, twice in NYC and once in Washington DC. It was a very exciting performance to watch and I think the recording came out very good. It's a very interesting work that was not received well when it was premiered, sort of like some of Beethovens or Brahms Symphonies, but I think it's worth hearing, even though it does not have a hugh bass clarinet cadenza, not even a big clarinet one. I did have an interesting part though. Thanks again all, it was fun. ESP
