I want to know what should I do in order to deal with the lining being stained. Obviously I can't hurl the case in for a spin cycle...
anyone?

A really dirty old case probably has more than one type of grunge in it, and sometimes the interior needs washing out twice, or more, with different types of products. I like to start with liquid dish detergent, such as Palmolive, on a fairly wet sponge. Next, I rinse out the case with a wet sponge and plain water, then dry the case open in the sunlight. I prefer to get away with just dish detergent when possible, because a product meant for use on dishes is less toxic than the alternatives.
Usually any stains left are either mold, mildew or those mysterious dark brown stains probably left behind by the outer space aliens that sneak in to eat the cork grease. Often, a bathroom cleaner such as Lysol Basin Tub and Tile Cleaner, will get rid of most of those remaining stains. If I use a bathroom cleaner, I make sure to rinse very thoroughly, because I don't want reeds or mouthpiece exposed to any Lysol residue. Then I dry the case open to the sun again. If there's still a smell, I follow up with Febreze (then rinse and dry in sun yet again).
Alas, I have no magical formula for getting rid of all of the stains. Chlorine bleach might do the trick, but it would also bleach out the fabric and make it look just as bad, if not worse. Often, the worst staining also means deteriorated, shabby fabric with worn spots and even holes. If the fabric has worn out or if case still looks or smells nasty after two washings plus Febreze treatment, then I rip out the lining and replace it.

But you don't say what kind of stain it is. In my experience.....just live with it or hurl the case...apologies to Lelia whose advice is an alternative.

I believe it's caused by the wax. The concentration build-up is around where the joints might be. I estimate that it's had 1.5 year top to built-up.
(will try detergent method and see how that goes~ thanks Lilia)
