 Hahn and Hartmann synthetic reeds
Author: gigaday

I see a lot of people are very enthusiastic about Legere reeds but no-one ever seems to mention the Hahn or the Hartmann. The sound of the Legeres is not to my taste although I find them very reliable and consistent.

My preferences for canes reeds are Vandoren V12 3 and Rico GCS Thick Blank 3 in a VD M15 mouthpiece.

I was tempted to try the Hahn and the Hartmann because they have a grain that runs the length of the reed in a similar way to a cane reed. I have been very pleased with the results and find that they are easier blowing than other reeds and have a full sound as well as great dynamics. But that's just my opinion.

I have found that a Hahn 3 works for me in the M15, the 3.5 needed a bit of sanding as did the Hartmann Carbon Fibereed MH.

Has anyone more experienced than I tried these? I know that there is a lot of interest in synthetic reeds and many people are seeking the "holy grail" of the "perfect reed" and might be interested to give their feedback.

Tony
