 ShowBoat, Riverwalk Jazz
Author: Don Berger

I had 2 great hearings on F M [2nd recorded] this weekend of the "Jazz"version of Showboat by the R W Jazz combo on their NPR-PRI programs Fri 9 PM [CST] and 6 PM Sun. The Ferber story, not the '50's ? modified? movie story [happy ending], was excerped, but all of the fine tunes were played appropriately, and Warfield's narration was also was excellent ! Ron Hockett's cl playing was superb, as was Cullen's and the rest of the group. More later, busy, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Cool, Don, I'll have to seek this out. I played Showboat for two three-month seasons back in 1980 and 1981 on the banks of the Cumberland in Nashville. Even though I've always been a clarinet player, I got stuck playing bari sax, flute and picc the first year and trumpet the second year. (When you're getting paid real union wages in your 20's, who gets picky about what instrument you have to play? At least I wasn't playing French Horn and bass guitar parts for TV commercials anymore) The first reed player got to play tenor sax and clarinet since he was the "old dude" (in his 30's back then and was Crystal Gayle's sax player). I never remembered any of his clarinet parts.

I'm looking forward to hearing the "Jazz" version after all of these long, long years.

Please provide more details Don. I'm not able to find any audio links. I HAVE found some Ron Hockett links that I will pursue.
Thanks,
Lon

Ron was my boss in the Marine Band (sax section). Just a monster player on soprano, alto, tenor sax as well as clarinet - does it all, reads, plays classical/concert music as well as he plays jazz!

TKS, Lon and Burt for comments and info. Searches for Riverwalkjazz Showboat and NPR Showboat will turn up more info, also Hockett Riverwalk will provide his history. I heard the Cullen combo [GREAT] in San Antonio at the Landing [on that sort-of river] and talked briefly with Ron. . As to NPR programing, I'd suggest searches for "your" local NPR FM station's schedules, as I did for our KRPS , Pitt State, in SW Kansas which serves NE Okla as well, by ?translator? , still good sound ! Listen and enjoy on F M , perhaps in other concert locations ??? Don

Thanx, Mark, Don
