My son will be a Sr. in high school this year. I would like to give him a nice clarinet that he can keep for a long time. I am not a musician. My understanding is wood is a big step in sound from the resin instrument he has been playing. I don't really think he will ever go pro, but he is quite good. Plays big band, and some classic.
A recommendation please.

Lyrique... sounds more nicer than wood (at least to me) and is easier to play and stays in tune too! Also has supreme tuning and playability... but your son would have to try it before he decides on it. It's really personal... one person's solution could be another's problem. Cheap too ($1200... a decent wooden instrument costs about $1500, and really nice ones cost around $3000 at least)
(Lyrique is a hard rubber clarinet, not wood... but it sounds way more nicer than wooden clarients)
