Just looking for a shortcut here.

To get the best out of your CXBA Grabner mouthpiece, what reed do you use?

 A good one.

Ba-dum-bum!

But you knew SOMEBODY would say that. So let me be the first.

All seriousness aside, if the mouthpiece is really a good one, it should work well with a wide variety of reed brands and styles. If the mouthpiece is "reed-picky", then it's not a particularly good mouthpiece! And given Mr. Grabner's reputation, I wouldn't expect that to be the case here.

I would start my search with a Vandoren #3. Sometimes it is tricky finding alto clarinet reeds. Some people use alto sax reeds with good effect.

I actually make my own alto clarinet reeds by cutting down bass clarinet reeds that are too soft for my style of bass clarinet playing.

When you shorten down and narrow a bass clarinet reed, it can make a fine alto clarinet reed. Since I have so many unused bass clarinet reeds it makes sense for me. Maybe not for someone else.

Thanks for posting. I will persevere with the Vandoren 3s that I have and maybe give a slighter softer reed a try too. I am fairly sure I just have to get on with it and put some hours in.

Though still interested what has worked for others if they have tried different reeds.

 Hi!

I've used the Gonzalez alto sax reeds, the VanDoren Java sax reed and the VanDoren alto clarinet reeds and all worked well with that mouthpiece. On alto I use a 2 3/4 or 3 even though I use harder reeds on the other clarinets.
