I'm seriously considering trying out some Backun barrels. What are the differences b/w the ringless, traditional, and fatboy? I've read the descriptions but I would also like to hear from those who have actually played using them.

I've tried a little bit of them.
Fat boy I didn't like at all, so I'm with-holding my opinion.
Ringless I felt generally was very easy blowing, with a more gentle sound, but with a little more of the playing characteristics of my stock barrel.
Moba, I think has more of a Moennig playing characteristic, in that it's a little more resistant, and evens things out pretty well. This, I found, had a more silky, fluid sound/feel which really makes connections much smoother.
The traditional I felt was more like the ringless in many ways, but a little more resistant.
These are all, however, comments that I make about the few pieces I have tried of each type. of course they are just generalizations because each will be different.
If you want a barrel from Backun, I would suggest trying as many as possible to find a good match for your instrument, because I find that Backun's equipment is more variable than any other that I've tried, and I had to go through about 40 barrels to find the one I own. I still usually play on my stock, however, and only whip out the backun for a very specific sound concept, and when I want to be less projecting without compromising with my air and support.
I would just try though, because 50 different answers from bboard probably isnt' going to help much

My experience, too, when I got an assortment of styles to try was that each had such different bore openings and tapers that I couldn't feel confident that the design or specific wood was actually the reason for the barrels' different playing characteristics. Your best bet is to try as many as you can reasonably get your hands on - of all the styles. I finally found two I liked - both ringless but one in grenadilla and the other in cocobola.
