 Buffet RC?
Author: sbl03

I was looking into one from 1975, the first year they began to produce these. How does it compare to older R13s? Tone quality, etc.

Is there a difference between a European RC and an American RC? I could not find this in the search results.

It is my understanding that the RC is much more common in Europe. I've only seen a few in the states, and a few here in Canada. I don't know if they have different models for europe than america, but I'd be interested to find out.

From http://www.buffet-crampon.com/en/history.php

"In 1921, a young beginner, Robert Carrée, was hired by the company. He was an extremely talented acoustic technician and developed the R13 clarinet in 1950 and the RC clarinet in 1975. These in turn led to the creation of the Festival and Prestige professional models."

I have an RC, and it is a very serviceable tool. It has the "common" intonation challenges of the R13. It is much, much easier to play in tune than my previous Buffet.

I'd say that the characteristics of an RC and an R13 are so variable, that you could stick either one in my hands, and I couldn't tell the difference or identify the instrument.

>>dont think that there are any tonal differences since its the same model.<<

There are fundemental differences that I'm not the right person to explain, but as I once understood talking to a representative from Buffet who once approached us after a concert in Bucarest, the basic models were R13 and RC until Tosca came about. The other existing models are just variations that come and go. Like the Festival is an R13 for Europe etc.

I know there are differences in placing of the speaker pipe. RC is more conical in various ways and intonation between chalumeau and clarion is better on the RC. The RC tends to play a bit sharp to my experience. The R13 has a more solid feeling but maybe less flexible, also only to my own experience.

My A clarinet is an RC, purchased in Paris in the late 1980's, so it has an "F" serial #. I find it to be better in tune and easier to play with the typical 442 pitch of the orchestras I've played with. No problem "matching" either of my R13 Bb clarinets. Might be that the export (USA) models come with a longer barrel -- I did have Vince Marinelli supply me with a 65mm barrel for the RC A.

there is no difference but pitch and maybe nickelplating.

between r13and rc there is a huge difference. r13 is, as i understood it evenly ploycylindrical, and the rc is tappered.
the rc is lighter and, i think, more flexible in tone than the r13. which is darker and more... american.?! :)
also the toneholeplacenments are different.
the festival and the prestigue i have heard, are infact a r13 and a rc, but with higher quality wood taken from the very center of the log, extra keywork and metalrings on the tenons.

i have to check the manufacturingdates properly. the bc site is obvously wrong. according to them one of Bb is from -64 and the A is from -73.
maybe a bug. the site was very unstable last time i checked..
get back to you on this...
