How long does it take to produce a solid consistent sound when instructing yourself. I am planning on getting lessons in the near future but would like to know an answer to this question. Thanks.

It isn't just the embouchure. It also has to do with breath support and other factors. It can take a while to get what I would call a good, steady sound. Your mileage will vary, depending on various factors, including whether you play any other wind instruments.

Welcome to the fellowship! :)

How long have you been playing?

If you are teaching yourself, where are you getting information about embouchure from? If you teach yourself a poor embouchure position, it will make it a much longer road to getting a consistent sound. You say you're getting lessons soon, and that's the best thing you can do!

Learning a good embouchure and proper air support (air support being as important as bow technique is for violin) are the foundations for solid and consistent sound. I'm sure there will be some agreement on this in later comments...

All the best,

Nathan
