Does anybody know what the PRESTIGE basset horn BC1713 is?

Does anybody know what the PRESTIGE basset horn BC1713 is? I can't find any info on it and the BC website has absolutely NO info on it whatsoever (at least since 3:03 PM CT).

It looks like an alto clarinet to me, not even having an extended range except for Eb, but it has a straight bell which is confusing... It's labeled basset "HORN", so I assume it's in F?

It's what it says it is - a basset-horn - a clarinet in alto F with extra notes down to written low C. It was composed for by Mozart, Mendelssohn, R. Strauss and others. Here in Europe basset-horns are much commoner than eb alto clarinets.

The picture of the horn does not show a low C extension. It only goes down to Eb according to the picture.

http://www.buffet-crampon.com/files/products/product_717.jpg That's a basset horn to low Eb, though the ONLY basset horn Buffet make now is the Prestige to low C (which you can ju-u-u-u-st see from this tiny picture):

Sorry about my first post - I had not seen a picture of the instrument. Surely the picture must be old - Leblanc made a straight "basset-horn" down to low Eb only, but they stopped making them about 1957, when they changed to the more usual model going down to low C.

That's an odd one - I thought it was an old photo, but it's from their current site - and I've never seen these listed before (but only mentioned in Leblanc's catalogue, and never pictured). It hasn't got the usual Prestige silver badge on it, so I don't really know what to make of it.

And a bit pointless considering a basset horn is usually expected to go to low C, which will have some limitations on this low Eb model making it not all that worthwhile for some of the repertoire. Maybe it's even more specialised than a standard low C basset horn!

Here's a Prestige basset horn being played in a less than usual setting:

Actually, by looking at the model numbers (BC1723 for the basset horn down to C and BC1713 for the one down to Eb), it seems that it is a basset horn just to Eb because the second to last digit is one lower (or the smaller number has ten added).

...for a horn that you'll rarely use in ensemble.

Now if you love improv in the key of F....
