Is it in silver plate or nickel plate?

A silvercloth or even an old T-shirt will go some way to brightening up the nickel plate by removing the surface grime or bloom that forms on it, only it won't restore the finish if it's turned dull grey as that will require machine polishing and hand ragging with buffing compound once the instrument is all in pieces.
