Might be too long a jump from 3-1/2 to 2. If you're talking about the regular Rico reeds that are now in the orange boxes, you should be able to find a music store that will sell them individually. Buy a couple of #3 and a couple of #2-1/2 and see which feels more comfortable.

What mouthpiece are you using? Are you sure the instrument isn't stuffy because of bad pads or misaligned keys?

Depending on how long the instrument has been sitting, I would try to get the instrument to a tech for adjustments. but, as Karl asked, what mouthpiece are you using?

I, also, returned to playing occasionally after a long layoff (40 yrs). Trying a Rico 2 makes perfect sense to me, though I never used stiffer than a 2 1/2 in my highschool days.

Mouthpieces can be finicky too, depending on how open or closed they are.

If she's still hard to play, check for leaky pads or joints. Good Luck.

Try it. It's a little piece of wood, not a salary cut.

A Vandoren 3 1/2 will feel tougher than a Rico 3 1/2. It's kind of like going up from a Rico 3 1/2 to a 4. Also if you haven't played in a while then you stamina will undoubtably have decreased.

Check out this reed brand comparison chart.
