Hi everyone,
sorry for another reed topic, but I have a question
I just bought a new pack of v12s and they feel somehow different. They have a new individual packing, but also the cane feels different to me. Stiffer and I can't find a single reed that is even slightly playable with my set up. V12s are normally no problem and I'm concerned that they have changed their cane in some way.
Anyone heard anything about this? anyone experience what I am?

I am also finding the Vandoren 3.5 V12 reeds harder than they used to be. I now play on number 3.

You know what? I just opened a new box of V-12's. I did notice the new individual cases, with the rounded top. Hmm...
I did also notice that the reeds seemed a bit more stiff. Especially along the rails of the reed. They didn't give me that open sound right off the bat.. I had to play on them for a bit before they opened up. Which really suprised me, because I just purchased a Spriggs Ligature - which REALLY opened up my sound. (I LOVE THAT THING!) They still don't feel like that VD V-12 #4's I am used to though. Maybe after the break-in process, they will be better than the old V-12's! We can always hope!

I was recently in the states and there I bought 5 boxes V12 3.5 because they are so much cheaper there than here in Sweden. I have opened the first box and have tried to break in 8 of the reeds in that box for 6 days now, and none plays well! They are much too stiff and it's practically impossible to get a clean and focused sound...
Haven't noticed anything new with the plastic sleeves though...

I have the same problem with Vandoren Rue 56. I played 3.5 for years, but recently they are stiffer, so 3.0 are better for me. About 2-3 acceptable reeds per box of 10. I am considering making my own, but need instructions, please.

Are those people finding them harder opening boxes that now all use the Flow Packs? That could have something to do with it.

Wondering out loud: "Could Vandoren have switched from (porous) Argentine cane for their V12's to (firmer) French or Spanish cane?" Or could climatic changes have given the cane harvested in different years differing characteristics? Arundo donax, like -- say -- Pinot Noir, is an agricultural product, not a manufactured one. Just as wines of different vintage years from the same vineyards often have varying aesthetics that even I can discern, why shouldn't the same apply to our reed cane?

Hi I know this was posted a while ago...
I have noticed this as well. To me the cane seemed better when it came in the new individual packing. Fibres seemed to be thinner, closer packed and generally more dense.
This seems like a really big improvement.
Isn't it meant to take time for reeds of higher quality cane to blow in? - I thought that was part of the Gonzalez sales pitch.
Anyway, no complaints from me.

Alexis I agree with you that good quality reeds need longer brake in time and then they last longer. But I will never understand how people can only get 1-3 playable reeds pr box of V-12(are your mouthpiece maybe bad?) I used them for a long time and I always got like 8-9 playable reeds pr box and I hardly ever adjusted them. For me Gonzalez are more quality reeds than V-12(last longer) but they are very consistant and that is not to my liking since I play in many different situations. At home I need a bit harder reeds,at musicschool I need softer ones and at band rehersal I need stiffer reeds and I get all this variants in one box of V-12.
