 New Case
Author: Max S-D

This coming school year, I'll be living off campus and riding my bike to school as often as I can. The problem is, I can't ride my bike and carry my clarinet case (stock Buffet Bb/A) at the same time. What good double cases are available that I could wear on my back while riding a bike?

I'm willing to spend what it takes to get a case that will protect my instruments from damage and will make it as comfortable as possible to ride up a big hill with a clarinet on my back. Of course, I would prefer it if it didn't cost an arm and a leg...

I've never used it, so I can't vouche for its durability, but this one certainly seems light/compact enough:

It's quite expensive though... $267 at WWBW.

I have an altieri case cover for a (I believe) leblanc double case. It's not super padded, but it does the trick for riding/walking around with backpack type straps as well as a shoulder strap.

Alternatively, you can get two stock single cases and stack them one on-top of another in a large backpack. Where I am now, I put my case as well as a binder of music and other little things (snacks and whatnot) in a bookbag and carry that.

Or, if you're lucky, you might be able to catch some REALLY slim single cases (the kind where the case is so slim it actually 'bubbles' where the bell juts out)

I can't vouch for BAM cases, but I've heard they work well and do the trick. But I just mentioned some less costly options.

Get a rear-tire rack mount/basket for your bike, and attach your case to it using bungee cord. :)

That'd be the obvious choice here. Unless you buy a bike for less utilitarian purposes.

A back pack..................... throw it in your backpack and whala......?

I've put my Bb into a backpack before, but that won't work now because my Buffet double case is ENORMOUS. Currently, my only bike is my road bike, which I would prefer not to put a rack onto, but that might be the easiest way to do this.

Clariphant, I've definitely been eyeing the BAM case, but I'm just a little bit hesitant to drop that kind of money. Like I said, though, if that's what it takes, then that's what I'll do, but if I spend that kind of money, I want to make sure it's the best option for me. Especially because I also need to buy a bike-safe case for my tenor and I get paid minimum wage!

I actually hadn't thought about a case cover/gig bag, but it's a great idea. I should check that out.

My Ridenour double case is roomy, solid and has comfortable backpack straps. Mine came with an A clarinet in it, but I can't imagine Tom refusing to sell the case alone.

FWIW, the single Bam XLight case works great for me and is super-light. I've been eyeing the double, but, quite frankly, I don't use my A enough to make it worth it.

IMO, the Bam is very well-made and has more than fulfilled my expectations for the last 6 years.

I second the BAM case. The padding is amazing. Your clarinets will be indestructable in one. Only two little issues. They dont hold much "stuff" inside, so you'll wind up carrying accessories separately. The other item is that the zipper has a tendency to wear out after a few years. The solution there is that BAM will re-cover your case for much less than the cost of a new one.

I picked up a PRECIEUX double clar case for my orchestral colleague.
It's really well made, more compact than most, takes extra barrels, and has an expanding outer pocket for music, music stand etc. She carries it as a backpack. She says it's light, strong, and comfortable to carry.
Don't know if they make them any more but but it's a cracker if you can find it.
If I can find a link to a US West Coast seller I'll post it. This appears to be an Oz site.....
