The Clarinet BBoard

Hello Everyone,
I'm preparing to study with Mr. Neidich in the fall, and through listening to recordings and a previous lesson with his wife, I have alot to learn about their philosphies on the clarinet (articulation, embouchure...). I was wondering if there were any Neidich students on the board who can help me out in terms of their teaching style. I'm most interested in their appoach to the embouchure. I would see about another lesson over the summer, but they're both very busy and won't be in NYC that much, so I was hoping to get a head start. Can anyone who has had a lesson/studied with him perhaps give me some insight?
Thanks!

Neidich has a relatively unique stance on embouchure. A lot of lower lip.

Neidich is actually a renegade teacher, despite the fact he studied with Russianoff. He believes trills should be played from the movement from the elbow and that readjusting your whole embouchure before breathing is a good way to keep a stabl embouchure. He hates tradionalism and is a fan of music. In regard towards embouchure.... GOOD LUCK SON.

Regarding Chris22311's post, "despite the fact he studied with Russianoff".
From my experience, I really would not have called Russianoff a traditionalist. He often enjoyed going against the mainstream and had his own slant on things.

From a class that I took a couple years ago:
He has this philosophy about having a slighlty different position on the reed for each of the different octaves on the clarinet... he would need to explain this to you but I had never heard of it before. However he was very into this idea. Seemed to work for him.
Also, on technique::: he believed that the fingers should be away from the clarinet in fast passages and not too close. NO CLOSE FINGERS......
Apart from that open throat and not straightening your ring fingers in fast passages.

It would be a great honor to study with him. His clarinet heritage is traced back to Daniel Bonade through his father. That alone would hold my respect for him- whether or not he buys into Bonade's philosophies. High fingers sound an aweful lot like the result of portamente drills to me.
Boy, if I could play like Mr. Neidich....... Well, there's no hurt in dreaming.
Good luck in everything, and enjoy your time with him.

Thank you everyone for your posts. I guess I should of asked, beside his philosophies, does anyone know some of the excercises he uses with students (for example, Ken mentioned an excercise on voicing in a Mannes Day recap).

To my surprise...Charlie Neidich is not in Local 802, or any other Local in the
A.F. of M. So I cannot provide you with his email, phone #, or address.
He did perform with us in Central Park at one of our Naumburg concerts, as a soloist. I assumed he was in Local 802, as he lives and works here in NYC, but he has chosen to no longer be an active member.
So, not all professional musicians in or out of NYC belong to the A.F. of M., but I still think it's a good idea to join and participate in the largest group of professional musicians.

Hi,
I am also going to be studying with Neidich next year. I have had several lessons with him already, and if you would like to discuss, please email me. I am by no means an authority on his philosophies, but I can say that he is a wonderful teacher and his students enjoy him very much.

Hey Bryan, thanks for extending the offer! I can't see where your email address is located... would you mind emailing me with your experiences with him so far?
