 V annoying sticky thumb ring!

Can anybody give me a 'quick fix' tip on how to stop the thumb ring from sticking?

I doesnt stay down, it just pops up a fraction too late - at first i thought it was pad under the A key but on a closer look it is the register key ring that is the delay

I have tried cleaning a bit of 'gunk' from around the tube where the ring sits around but it seems to be somethingl ower down to the body of the instrument

any quick help would be appreciated as I have a show tonight!!

Had it once - it was the linkage between thumb ring and the F# vent/1st ring (beneath the side trills) that was sticky. A bit of cork grease cured that.

Rub the cork on the upper part of the linkage with a soft lead pencil, but make sure you don't knock the cork off or it'll sound like a typewriter.

The key cork has a tendency to wear at the contact point between the extended part of the thumb ring key and the extented part of the F# key where they interact and meet. Check to see if they need replacing or cleaning.

could be alot of things...check the cork (or other material) on the f sharp key where it contacts the thumb key at the pivot...if it is worn out it could cause it to hang...also check to see if thumb key moves freely by depressing f sharp key...if it does, then you know its not rubbing against the tone hole due to dirt or shifting in which case your problem is most likely at the pivot point.

Thanks everyone!

Well I took the thumb ring off and cleaned it (was quite mucky!) but you are all right, it seems to be the linkage that is sticking.

I have rubbed the cork with pencil lead but it doesn't seem to have completley cured is as it is still a little sticky

any other bright ideas on what I can use???

7.30 is showtime......bugger!

Stick a piece of sellotape on the cork on the upper linkage as a temporary cure, then have your tech replace the cork with a harder wearing material when you have more time.
