 Hi folks,
I was just looking up different patents using the google patent search.
I found an interesting old patent (#1896814) for a ligature/ moutpiece combination.
The interesting thing is not the patent itself. It is the mention of "bamboo reeds" that players of reed instruments use.
Was there a time when reeds were made of bamboo?? Does anyone have any historical info on this?? That would change a key point of period instruments if it were true.
 here is the address http://www.google.com/patents?vid=USPAT1896814&id=BkZHAAAAEBAJ&printsec=abstract&zoom=4
It mentions the "bamboo reeds" in the third paragraph- a bit above line "20".

 any comments??
