 larghetto in 6/8

Hey everyone, I have an audition for my high school band for next year in a week, and I was wondering how fast/slow I should play a piece with a time signature of 6/8, and a tempo of larghetto? I wasn't sure if the quarter notes get the beat, or if the eighth notes get the beat, so I might be playing it to slow.

Hmmm...

Larghetto means "a little bit slow" as in "not quite as slow as largo."

My vote is usually for eighth notes getting the beat, but it'd depend on the piece. For example, there's a Dminor duet in the Rubank advanced volume 1 which I usually teach in 6. It feels better in 2 though, but the subdivision is necessary to play the dotted rhythms correctly. It's not fast either way...

A quick metronome check for my "usual" tempo on that one is eighth note around 120ish, and dotted quarter around 40-42

The piece I am playing is also in the rubank advanced method 1 book, number 6 on page 24. So, I should play the eigth notes at a tempo around 120, and the quarter notes at around 60 or 63?

Well, the deal with 6/8 is that you either feel it in 6 (eighth notes get the beat) or 2 (DOTTED quarter notes get the beat). For that one, I usually feel it a little slower than the one I mentioned above and tend not to feel it as much in 2. Probably 108-112 for the eighth note will suffice.

Use the same rule as playing an adagio. Slow enough that you can subdivide it (i.e., count 6 beats per measure) but fast enough that you don't have to (i.e., you can count 2 beats per measure).
