The naughty baaaaddd girl of the oboe, Blair Tindall, wrote the article.
Remember her? She authored a book that read like a tabloid expose of the classical music meat market.

At least she is working and hopefully sticking to the facts.
Last I heard, she married Bill Nye the Science guy. Wonder if it lasted?

(Disclaimer - patent holder of a genetically altered arundo donax and paid presentation at the 1 encuentro de clarinete Xilema Dec. 2006)
The key to growing and maintaining Arundo Donax is containment and irrigation. While on a whirlwind tour of Spain I spied Arundo Donax plantations along the Costa del Sol and had to stop by for a chat and confirmed that much of the big name reed companies buy their cane from growing areas all around the Mediterranean area - much from Spain - at annual reed auctions. The cane buyers must have sharp and experienced eyes to decern cane quality but also must fill the total quantity needs into a bugetary formula which in some cases means buying lesser quality cane to fill the quota.

The Xilema Caynes plant in Valencia has all new UHL Technik (BB sponsor) machines and automation which is a far cry from the antiquated processes in most reed manufacturing plants that I have toured. The cut and cane quality are as always the pimary factors in making reeds however.
