I need information about Richard Hawkins mouthpieces, please post here your experiences.
What strength and brand of reeds use, and your feelings.
Great sound, pitch, articulation, blowing, etc.
Thanks a lot.

I've been using the "B" model since 2002 and still love it.

Using a range of reeds: V12 3.5-4, Gonzalez FOF 3.5-3.75, Rue Lepic 3.5-3.5+.

I tried 3, and each was very different. See if you can try a few as well.

I've also been playing on a "B" model since 2002. It has always felt very free blowing to me, almost a little on the wild side, but the projection, especially when playing in an orchestra, is far better than any other mouthpiece I've ever tried. Very clean, easy articulation, good intonation. I would say that in my experience this is not a mouthpiece that will play itself, unlike some of the Vandorens I've used (the M13 in particular). If my embochure is tired or I'm not using my air well, that will be very obvious in the quality of sound produced. Keeps you honest.

I mostly play on V12 5s...also Legere 5s.

Unlike Alex, I only tried one...during a lesson with Hawkins, he opened one of his desk drawers, pulled out a mouthpiece, and tossed it to me. Free mouthpiece! I didn't complain :). Haven't tried his newest model "R"...I think that's what my 2006 tax refund will be going towards.

EEBaum do you feel that Gonzalez FOF 3.5 and Vandoren V-12 3.5 strenght feel the same because I feel the FOF to be quarter strenght harder?

I find the FOF a quarter harder as well. My ideal V-12 would be a 3.75, so the 3.5 FOF works quite nicely. I keep the V-12 4s and FOF 3.75s around because I find them very agreeable if I let them sit for a few years.

I've been using a Hawkins DC1 (B Model which apparently is adapted specifically for Davie Cane to use Gonzalez FOF 3 1/2s- the reeds I play on. They're available through Davie Cane) since 2004. Phil Shapiro was my teacher in high school, so he had me try 10 or so mouthpieces before we settled on one I took on trial, and I ended up loving it after using it in "real life" situations.

Obviously, I use Gonzalez FOF 3.5s with it. Hawkins are very closed mouthpieces, so I guess you should keep that in mind when you're shopping. I think Ben Redwine measured mine to be a 1.02 opening, and ofcourse all mouthpieces are very slightly different. Earlier this year in a lesson Hawkins fixed something minor on my mouthpiece, but I'm sorry to say I'm not sure what he did. Hawkins is the master, though.

I really enjoy my mouthpiece. I've been hearing about the new R Model, but I've yet to try one. I'm happy with what I have, so I'm not really on the market anyway.

Great sound is a weird thing to comment on a mouthpiece with, since we all are the only real factor in what sound we have, but instead I'll say I like the focus my Hawkins provides me with overall. I notice a big improvement on articulation quality when I switched from a Leblanc Eddie Daniels model, but everyone will have their own opinions about that. Right now I'm focusing on quality of articulation in general, and I'm sure if my teacher reads this he will nod and smile.

Alex[76], I think the question would be better quantified if you ask about the "ease" at which you can have all of the good qualities you mentioned. Those things are dependent completely on the player. I know you know this, I don't mean to be annoying by bringing that up.

I play the Richard Hawkins "B Model" mouthpiece. I have been very pleased with the tone, projection, intonation and response. I have had many positive comments about my sound since switching to a Hawkins. I have been playing professionally for almost 20 years, and it is the best mouthpiece I have tried.

My set- up with the Hawkins is:

Buffet R-13 Clarinet
Charles Bay Rhodium Plated Ligature
Eddie Daniels Acubore "B" Series" barrel
Vandoren 56 Rue Lepic Reeds Size 3.5+

I have heard about Richard's new "R model" mouthpiece and am saving up to try it.

Also --I have many of my younger students use the Hawkin's Student Mouthpiece and have been very happy with the results.

I've used Richard's mouthpieces for about 6 years, and I think his work is exceptional. I played an older Zinner blank (just labeled "Richard Hawkins", now known as the "S"), and was using it up until about 6 months ago. On that mouthpiece I prefered 4 1/2 V12's. I am currently using a B that I also feel works nicely with 4 1/2 V12's, but a 4 works well too. In general, I feel the B is a little more brilliant. Articulation is nice in terms of quality and ease. I use a regular (not inverted) Bonade ligature. I play in an orchestra in a big, old theater, and projection is generally not an issue. I think his work is great. He does a really nice job with old mouthpieces too. Thanks

I just tried 3 Richard Hawkins "R" Models. I really liked the ease of articulation and leaps were easier and smoother on these models. Over all though, it wasn't a whole deal better than the mouthpiece I already own to buy one.

I love Richard Hawkins' mouthpieces!!! For about a year and a half I played on the B model...very round sound with a nice ring to it! Recently, I switched to the R model...which is absolutely amazing...It has a darker sound than the B model, but still has a brilliant quality to it...it also allows me to play with more volume...I really recommend that you try these mouthpieces...they are, in my opinion, the best thing out there!
