Selecting new instrument

Hi everyone!

This week I will receive three Buffet R13's in Bb that have been hand-selected for me. I believe they will all be good, and my job is to select one and send the other two back, and I only have less than 14 days to do so.

So what things am I looking for?! I consider myself inexperienced at choosing clarinets - this R13 is to replace a Leblanc Concerto that I picked out myself, and it wasn't a mistake but I didn't pick the best instrument I could have either. All advice appreciated, as usual.

Assuming this is for orchastra band(since buffet isn't the best choice for marching band), listen for the over sound of the instrument. Sometimes it might take an hour to hear it. Try playing scales in lower octves and lower octives. Which notes come out clear and more crisp(better). When I went to select my instrument(between a yahama and a buffet) I just played a few scales and then tried my marching band song. After that I knew which one suited me better, and played better for me(the yahama).

Although not the case here, a Buffet B12 (or even a Greenline R13) would be perfectly fine for outdoor band work...GBK

Check the altissimo F as well (Sp.Th. oxxC#/G#|oooAb/Eb) - some R13 clarinets are a bit duff up there.

go through each note and check the pitch of each. Check each clarinet when cold, warmed up and very warmed up and make a tuning chart for each. Try altissimo registers as well, be careful not to play more than 15 mins MAX on each, because there not broken in yet right? And check for resonance and just plain sound. It would really help if you had a teacher or knowledgeable clarinet player around.
