I am new to the BBoard, and am looking for information about new clarinets for a high school student. She is a decent NC All-District, possibly All-State player and plans on pursuing a music education degree. She is ready to update her horn and has found some E13s in the area that are available. One is new and the other, we're told, is a custom clarinet with a left hand Eb key. What are the differences between and E13 and R13, and does anyone have any reservations about the E13, especially for a college music major?

When I bought my clarinet, I tried two E-13's and multiple R13s, among a few others. One of the E13's I played had better intonation than any of the R13s I tried, but the tone wasn't as pleasing to me. Normally I would say that there isn't much of a reason to not spend a little extra on getting an R13, but with the new prices the gap has gotten much larger. If she has the money, finding a good R13 will probably be the best choice for university studies. There isn't anything wrong with an E13, though, and I'm sure there are some very good E13s to be had for much less than a new R13. Basically, she should just play as many instruments as possible to find the one she likes, and then check the price tag to see if it's realistic.

And she should try other makes of clarinets as well as Buffets while she's there. She might be surprised that a different make of clarinet might be the one that suits her.
