String ligature or metal ligature? Or else?
Author: Al Amir

I recently bought on Ebay an antique Bilton 8 keys 1820 (?) clarinet. The mouthpiece was in perfect condition so I tryed to play it but I had to make a string ligature not having a fitting metal one.
I was surprised how easy it was to make the ligature and I tryed as well on my modern clarinet and basset horn. Even if the mouthpiece is not for a string ligature it fits perfecty.

Results: staccato comes much better than with metal ligature, and high notes come more easly.

Now I play only with string ligature. Which kind of ligature did I use ? Just shoes strings 2,5 mm diam. 110 cm lenght. You can chose the color you prefer !

not expensive to try !

You can try silk rat-tail braid cord or similar materials in the same round braiding such as 100% cotton (my preference) or polyester.

Don't forget to run the cord a few times through some 100% beeswax to make it tacky (particularly important for polyester thread).

I use just a normal piece of string on my classical clts, it's more authentic.

Al Amir doth opine
"for my 8-key which lig would be fine?"
I think I can this thread(sic) unwind
I suggest a ligature made of twine.

The Rule of Thumb:

Conventional wisdom does suggest
"The thumb as a reed clamper beats all the rest"
Genetic engineering should be your quest:
grow another arm from out of your chest

Dreamin'

If clarinets were cool like guitars or drums
Supermodels would hold my reed
with their thumbs.

Into the sunset I would drive
In a Ferrari or similar ride.
Roadies would swab my instruments clean
and Kloc would supply me free R-thirteens.

Against the windmills of my mind
The jousting pole splinters
