Composer's Publishers

Greetings,

When practicing concerto or chamber works, would it be better to use the original publisher’s edition of the work? How would one find out what publisher(s) a composer used? Is there a listing someplace? I am working on the Brahms Trio using the Peter’s edition and started thinking, ‘Who originally published this work? Wouldn’t it be better to use that edition?’ What do all you seasoned clarinet veterans think? Does it even make a difference?

I often seek out Urtext editions, as they go right back to the manuscript. They are usually very good scholarship, and give a good description of discrepancies found in the music. They cost a little more, but it's a more "informed" way of looking at the music.
