 GRABNER SW-1 PERS. MOUTHPIECE
Author: inspiring musician

Lately I've been experimenting with some good mouthpieces, and I have not yet tried any Walter Grabner Mouthpieces. I need something thats good and projecting for symphonic band/chamber ensembles, yet felxible to perform in delicate solo playing. I'm really interested in trying the Grabner SW-1 Personal Mouthpiece, but I haven't heard any reviews on them. I saw the product description on Mr Grabner's website, but there are no specific customer comments on this mouthpiece. If any of you have tried some of his mouthpieces, particulary this one, please respond with your thoughts and opinons.

Walt Grabner's mouthpieces are exceptional - the best I have ever tried, and I use both K11 and K13. I have thrown away my Mays as a result, whilst the Morgans are also lovely but for me Grabners feel totally comfortable.

He is very easy to buy from and happy to personalise.

Wonderful mouthpieces. Albeit not my personal mouthpiece right now, but then again, I never had one thoroghly personalized from him (the Personal series). The ones I have tried, his standard kaspar and chedeville when they were available, have been GREAT. And the ones he has refaced for me have also been wonderful.

I have played around with AW-Pers and K13, loved them both. He faced a Chris Hill blank for me, which plays amazingly dark and smooth in the clarion and altissimo. quite resistant, but dead on intonation and good projection. It will probably be my main mouthpiece pretty soon, amazing tone. He has my top recommendation, definately think about the AW-Pers, the tone is gorgeous and good projection/intonation.

What are your thoughts on his Kasper mouthpieces (k-11 and k-13 specifically). It seems to me that most people enjoy his k-11's and k-13's.

I can't speak for the K11, but the K13 is a very good all purpose mouthpiece. Very good projection and intonation, fairly easy articulation, nice ring to it, and not to bright. I like the Aw-Pers best of his standard mouthpieces (darker than the others), but it is really a chamber/solo mouthpiece, but not much of jazz or ensemble piece. If you are looking for a good all around mouthpiece, its a good one.

IM:

I have a Graber AW, not the AW-Pers, and am extremely happy with it. It's a phenomenal mouthpiece that easily outplayed the other mouthpieces I had tried before purchasing it last summer. The only one that came close was the Gennusa. I tried Hites, Fobes, Gennusa, various VDs, and a few others I can't remember right now. The Grabner has a very strong chalameau and nice balance through the remainder of the range.

I use VD 12 #3s with this mouthpiece but would like to get up to a 3.5 as they seem to bring out a nicer sound.

MOO,
Matt

I play a Grabner SW something or another and cannot speak well enough about it but you are talking to the wrong people.

Best thing is to get an email to Walter tell him what you play instrument and reed etc, what you want to accomplish and then let him do his thing. He is very good at what he does, so let him make suggestions and go from there.

Good luck

Best

What did you mean when you said that you couldn't speak well about it?. Did you just receive it?

... Ricks's other point is also quite important ...

A number of us have said great things about the mouthpieces -- as do all of the testimonials on Walter's web site from some famous players and some regular folks and the fact that he sells a LOT of these at pretty high-end prices and very few ever land on the auction site which is the home of buyer's regret and mistakes -- with the most important thing that has been said here by several of us being to talk to Walter as he will be helpful (and will let you return mouthpieces if you do not like them as do most of his peers and competitors).
