 Buffet E-11?

Concert season is coming up, and my uhh..*embarrassed*..FirstAct clarinet isn't gonna hold through so well. Actually, it's not SO bad...I separately purchased a LeBlanc mouthpiece and a Bonade ligature and the tone is all right. Anyway, I posted earlier about trying to get a new student model clarinet..but after speaking with a few friends, the idea of getting a used instrument came across the conversation...soooo... I just called a music shop for some price quotes on what the average used E11 would cost and the guy said between $200-400...which was an eye opener for me since they retail $1200 or so new and most places sell at $750 anyway. So, yeah...I was wondering what I should expect from a good quality, used clarinet-- price-wise that is. (Sorry, I've called that shop like at least 3 or 4 times now...and I feel awfully stupid because I really don't seem to know what I'm talking about over the phone with them..probably on these forums too. BTW, I'm quite the newbie at all of this--just a freshman working on my 3rd year of band; though, working vigorously to play just as well as the upper classmen.)

*Ahem* Sorry, that was kinda unnecessary to state out. But yeah...if you guys can, help me out a bit. =/ Thanks!

I have an E-11, I got it for Christmas last year. I fell in love it immediately upon looking at it. It's a great horn, you can get a really nice tone from it. I suggest you get a nice Vandoren mouthpiece to go along with it.

Remember, you must swab a wood clarinet every time you use it. Wood clarinets do take much more maintenance and care than a plastic one.

Bottom line, you'll be extrememly satisfied with the E-11. Great tone and intonation for the money.

Try www.prowinds.com I have gotten 4 instruments from them. (including my E-11) Good prices too. (I think I paid $559 for mine) You have to call and get price quotes though because prices on the website are way higher than the actual price. Service is great and delivery is very prompt. (I got my orders in 2 days) Good luck on whatever you decide.

well i'm trying to buy one hopefully under $500s...if not, then I'll stick with B12 (or some said to get the Forte clarinet)...but yeah, my parents aren't willing to spend so much on a clarinet--$500 is probably stretching it a lot as is (*sigh* lol).

I can' t tell whether the store you have been callling is local or one of the national mail-order stores. However, if you have a local store with a used E11 in good playing condition in stock and they will sell it to you for $200 - $400, IMO you are getting a good price. This is the typical range for used E11's on eBay these days and buying on eBay generally entails greater risk for the buyer. Local stores usually charge more for this reason. Several years ago, a local store here (St. Louis) told me they would want around $800 for a used E11, if they had one. At that time, most, if not all, the stores around here were charging full list (or more!) for new instruments. They counted on the fact that most parents didn't know about the big mail-order stores.

Times change. Some of those local stores are no longer in business and there is now one (larger) local store whose prices appear to be closer (though still a little higher) than the mail-orders. The last time I checked, though, most of the other local stores were still pretty high.

A new E11 runs around $600 - $700. Used Buffets on eBay tend to bring about 60% of the price of a new one. If the store is local and you and your parents are ready to buy, I think it's time to pay the store a visit to look the instrument over.

Best regards,
jnk

FWIW - There is currently a well respected, large seller of clarinets on the famous auction site, who is offering a new, checked and set-up E11, (with assorted accessories) for $600 ...GBK

I reccomend buying it. I have one and I've had no troubles with it (so far). It fell once or twice and still works great lol. I got my E-11 for the best price in town but, the bad thing is that it didn't come 2 months later and they said it would come 2 weeks after I purchased it.
