markneukirchen clarinet barrel lenght

Author: grogery  Date:   2005-04-30 09:33 gentlemen, what length of barrel would have been typically put on circa 1920-1940 german clarinets? would barrel length differ if the clarinet was specifically built for the american market (different spelling of names (without umlaut), english model names, etc) as opposed to german market? i'm asking this because the barrel on my william nuernberger 'american professional' clarinet is not original (as it's clearly stamped with the word "france" could there have been a "markneukirchen threading" for screws and rods? any specifics on this threading? yes - i need to replace a rod :( would this threading more likely be some german 1930's industry standard; or perhaps the maker's own (now, why would they keep away from standards?) please note, i know how to measure and reproduce threadings, but i just thought to ask before starting this rather elaborate procedure - as perhaps the solution is not that complicated thank you, grogery

Author: grogery  Date:   2005-04-30 19:38 alseq, thank you for helping out. this clarinet consists of only two parts: a barrel and a single 'body'. it is a metal clarinet. (the 'body' equalling the conventional bell + lower joint + upper joint). the pads where not functioning, so i was not able to accurately check for intonation precision (i've taken the instrument apart to fix it). i removed all cork, pads, keys (so all measurements below are taken with cork removed/bare metal). the barrel's lenth is circa 67,5mm (it is slightly out of true, in places it is 67,4 and 67,6). i believe this is a non-standard measurement for a french barrel. further details on the barrel: the part of the barrel that takes the mouthpiece in is 16,8 mm deep (and between 22,5mm and 23mm wide). the part of the barrel that fits over the body of the clarinet is 12,6mm deep (and 16,7mm wide). the body's bore is 14,7mm wide. but the barrel's bore is slightly larger (i do not have a tool that is able to measure this, i will borrow one tomorrow). i guess it's 14,8 or14,9. the tenon has been filed upon, to allow the barrel to slide to approximately it's deepest point (which is, see above, 12,6mm). this tenon was originally circa 6mm deep and has been coarsely filed to be circa 11mm deep. the tenon's outer diameter is 15,9mm (leaving very little room for putting cork on.) do you need more data, should you prefer a drawing with these measurements? i know this sounds bad, but i would still like to fix this instrument, partly because i want to be able to work on my own clarinets, as i've seen some very bad work done by "music store people". i guess there's no better way to learn than by working on this one thank you again, grogery
