 Recommended performers for "Cantilene"
Author: sfalexi

Since "Clarinet Day" at Mannes College I've been trying to figure out what the title to this song was (it was performed by Charles Neidich at the evening concert, 18 Sep. 2005, and I thought it was such a beautiful piece).

After stumbling around on Amazon looking at random clarinetists, I stumbled upon "French Portraits" with Ricardo Morales and discovered that song as number 3 on the CD. It's called "Cantilene".

Before I rush out and buy this CD, I figured I'd ask for recommendations. Either for opinions on other artists interpretations (maybe there's another artist you feel played it better), or maybe there's another CD out there that has this song and also others that you recommend.

Anything would be appreciated. Thanks

Mr Morales plays that piece beautifully, as well as the rest of the disc. Actually, it's the finest clarinet recital disc I own, his intonation with piano is remarkable. SSG Shields at the School of Music has it on his database, so if he's still teaching there you can acquire it from him for free.

Alexi -

Cantilene was composed by Louis Cahuzac, and I think Cahuzac's own recording is head and shoulders aove the rest. He had a sound as big as a house. Even though the performance is from an ancient 78, it just jumps out of the speakers. Weiner stocks it, http://www7.mailordercentral.com/frederichweinerinc/prodinfo.asp?number=CDRG08.

The Cahuzac is Da Shizle for mizzle!

Ken, and others,

Do you think something would be lost if I were to buy this album on CD? I did a quick search and found that it is available on CD, but would the sound be noticeably more 'pure' or otherwise better from an LP than a CD?

Alexi -

Get the CD I linked to. The sound is much better than on the old Grenadilla Society LP, and the CD has a whole buch of other essential stuff by famous old-school players.

My favorite Cantilene is the second movement of Poulenc flute sonata. Jack Zoon of BSO CD is good.

You should check out the CD "The Clarinetist Composer" by
David Hattner, an (unfortunately infrequent) poster on this board.
