I am very curious about whether i should play the soprano now. I've played the alto in 5th-7th gade then i switched to the tenor and now i'm in 9th grade and i wanna play the soprano it would really help to hear from people.I'm not gonna keep my tenor but should i play both? And is it true about the intonation problems of the soprano? In concert band could i play trumpet music and/or clarinet music?

I play a soprano sax in a couple of jazz bands. and that is mostly were you'll find that instrument. you should keep up with both tenor and soprano sax, because not all band instructors will let you play soprano in conert band. it is true about the intonation, but it isn't a problem. with a smaller mouthpiece your embouchure has to be much smaller. but where people think theres a major problem in their horn, it's actually them. when you make a small adjustment in your embouchure it could make a big difference. it would probably be up to your band instructor to assign you a part. you can play either trumpet or clarinet. it all depends if there is a lot of that instrument. good luck, soprano is a fun instrument to play. hope this helps.

I agree with Theboy_2 to some degree, make sure you keep up with the tenor because you won't be using a soprano in concert band. There is a slight possibility that your director would tell you to play trumpet/clarinet parts but this is highly unlikely due to the nature of the sound of the instrument. It is very difficult to blend the soprano's sound with other instruments, especially the clarinet. A soprano sax doesn't have the same dark warm sound of a clarinet and could thus drown out/unbalance the section.

Composers and arrangers of music don't assign instrumentation arbitrarily. A soprano doesn't sound like a trumpet and it certainly wouldn't blend that well playing in unison with clarinets.

I'm not a director, but certainly a director who respected the Work would not let you do it, barring some compelling musical reason to affect the change that goes beyond a players frivolous desire.

Unless there is a Soprano Sax Solo. I know of 3 songs that DO have Soprano Sax Solos, Slava! by Bernstein, I believe a Reineke song by the name of Into the Raging River, and a Robert W Smith song, i don't know which one but i know there is a Smith song with a Soprano Solo. Soprano is an instrument for like Jazz and possibly Pep. On the music to these pieces i gave the name of, certain instruments, usually Alto Sax or Clarinet have the Soprano Sax cues. So don't get your heart set on playing Soprano Sax in Concert band, unless your band get's a part with a soprano solo.

i play soprano in concert band (that's about the only sax my band director wants me to play), but i have lots of solos that trumpets can't play (as u can tell, we have sucky trumpets, and no offense to others), and i fill in those solos. It's fun to, especially walking up to the mic and playing in front of thousands of people as they watch u
