i'd like to start self-teaching myself how to playing the dizi/chinese bamboo flute. but i don't know anything when it comes to buying it. what length should i get? what's the difference? what length is better? is it just personal preferences? also when i looked at some ordering sites they also ask for the specific key that i want. what's that? and how do i decide?
sorry for all the stupid beginner questions. your reply is greatly appreciated.

I've been playing dizi for many years since I was in high school. Most beginner starts on a G or F key instrument. They are short in length and the 6 fingering holes are quite close together so you don't have to stretch your fingers too much. For a beginner, attending regular lessons is essential. It's difficult to start and get good progress without the help of a good teacher.
Good Luck

It's difficult to explain the fingering and key of the dizi in a few sentences on a forum like this.
The dizi , like the clarinet, or trumpet is a transposing instrument. You'll get the note G with all 6 fingering holes closed in all dizi in all keys. But it is not really the "concert G" you get. It depends on the key of the dizi when made.
With all the 6 fingering holes closed,
If it is an instrument in C, you'll get the concert G.
If it is in G key, you'll get the concert D.
It it is in F Key, you'll get the concert C.
A dizi in the key of C is quite long in length, the player has to stretch his/her fingers wide enough to cover all the 6 fingering holes. It is not suitale for a beginner.
Hope this helps.
