A fife is the early version of a piccolo. They are held horizontal and are played much like a flute. It has no keys but only holes, the most common is a six-holed fife. I've never seen a fife in a concert band as usually a piccolo would be used. If it was used it would be for a special song and probably not on a day-to-day basis. You can however, see if your town or a town near you has a re-enactment group who will teach you how to play fife and then you can play in revolutionary war re-enactments.
