Does anyone know how to sharpen a reed knife. I have the knife, but I have just gotten a stone and don't really know what to do with it. Thanks!

I usually use Crock Sticks to keep my knife sharp, but there are sometimes when they just don't cut the mustard (or the cane) and you need to use a stone. I would definitely invest in some Crock Sticks for yourself however since they are much faster and easier to use on the fly than a stone. You should be able to find the at the Covey Oboe site www.oboes.com, or most other reed supply dealers.
With the stone, the way I learned to do it was to first oil the stone just a tad. Then hold the knife at about a 25 degree angle and run it across the stone diagonally from one corner to the other, forwards towards the cutting edge, not backwards. Then flip it over and do the opposite side running in the opposite direction. Then go back to the starting side and hold the knife at a slightly lower angle and run it across as before more slowly.
Next time around, start on the other side and repeat the process, so that you end on the lower, slower swipe on the opposite side from the first time around above.
Once you have established a nice cutting edge, you can then keep it up with crock sticks for a long time, as long as you don't abuse your knife... you know cutting apples and sewing with it and the like. *Eats apple*
