I heard a recording of 'Gabriel's Oboe' by Morricone from the movie 'The Mission' and thought it was beautiful! I never thought the oboe had a repertoire for nice music and I think it is a shame that it is neglected from usage in concert bands etc. Is there sheet music available for this piece? Could anyone suggest to me any other oboe music that (to you) sounds beautiful? This question could also apply to other woodwind instruments if you would like to suggest pieces for them too. I play music as a hobby - recorder, clarinet and flute, hoping to take up the rest of the orchestra (and perhaps other multicultural instruments). (I also play piano and trumpet). Thanks.

Check out the WiZARDS! double reed quartet web page:
www.dca.net/wizards. This has a list of their library and also clips of recordings. All of the musicians in WiZARDS! are very accomplished, and the 2 oboists are amazing. Also, orchestral music uses a lot of good oboe stuff. The Chicago Symphony's principal oboists have been consistantly some of the best in the world, like Still or Klein. These two oboists are absolutely beautiful to listen to; I would suggest listening to their solo CD's. Also, if you get a catalog for a double reed store, like forrests, you will find a huge list of solo music you can order as well as many recordings.
In bands, there are also some pretty good solo passages for oboe. Van Der Roost's Puszta and Rikudim have oboe solos. Also some Christmas music has good oboe solos, particularly that of eastern persuasion. There is much, much more, but you have to look for it.
