I was on the clarinet board i noticed a lot of talk about ligatures and stuff and i have a story to share. A lot of people wanna know what is the best ligature out there. It seems to be accepted that the metal ligs that come with clarinets are crap. I agree. I had a luyben clear plastic ligature and i did notice a change from the metal ligs but the luyben lig is not what i would call spectacular. I gave me what i would call a "plain sound" nothing special about it. I have used a rovner for a long time and i kinda just stopped thinking about whether or not it was the best ligature out there. I just lived with it and accepted it. However, one day i found the right ligature combination. The ligature was a cheap metal Selmer lig with 2 screws in the front. The reed was a Vandoren V12 3.5. The mouthpiece was a plastic Selmer "goldentone" 2 mouthpiece, long faced and VERY closed. I placed the ligature a little lower than normal on the mouthpiece and loosed the screws so that they just barely held the reed in place. I then played and out of my clarinet came the most round, robust, pure, beautiful sound i have ever played. The next day i tried the same thing but did not get the same result and i don't think i've ever produced a sound as lovely since that day. I guess that beautiful sound was just one ligature, one reed, one mouthpiece, one day, one moment in time...

question. how exactly does the tightness of the lig affect the overall sound? if you loosen the screws as much as blueklarinet did, won't the reed slide down after awhile? ...my senior has a transparent ligature too..

No actually the lig is supposed to be loose beacuse if its too tight the reed wont vibrate as well...anywayz that was a baeutiful story blueklarinet. i wish something like that would happen to me...congrats
