How do I get this dang thing to work. I blow and I blow and nothing comes out but a metallic hiss. How do I get that great Kazoo sound?

Since flutes are woodwinds, I have to agree kazoo should also be a member of the woodwind family.

I don't know if you really have to think of the kazoo as being a woodwind :-s. It's not a really an 'old' and 'classical' instrument like flute, oboe, clarinet or bassoon.

And flute was made of wood in earlier times, that's why it's a woodwind. A kazoo has never been made of wood.

Who plays it in an orchestra (if it's really needed once)? Not a woodwind player normally, but one of the drummers. So why should you bother?

There's really no point to this, but a woodwind is defined as any of a group of wind instruments (as a clarinet, flute, oboe, or saxophone) that are characterized by a cylindrical or conical tube of wood or metal usually ending in a slightly flared bell, that produce tones by the vibration of one or two reeds in the mouthpiece or by the passing of air over a mouth hole, and that usually have finger holes or keys by which the player may produce all the tones within an instrument's range. So a kazoo could be considered a woodwind, as it is the vibrating of the tissue-type-membrane-thing that makes the sound, similar to the vibrating of a reed.

And personally I've never been able to play the kazoo. I find this funny because I'm pretty good with woodwind instruments. :-p

YEH KAZOO.......WE PLAY THEM IN STAGE BAND......AWSOME
And yes they are woodwind, and bassoon reeds do a good job of annoying sounds too......But Kazoo is awsome, you can sing into it so fingering is no big deal at all
