Check out this site: http://www.phys.unsw.edu.au/music/flute/flute.html

This particular paper is on the flute, but compares Baroque, Classical, and Boehm (modern) flutes. The Baroque and Classical flutes are conical bore instruments while the Boehm flutes are cylindrical. This may help your research and might point you to other sites that can help.

I don't think you're correct in your reasoning about doubling or switching. I play both flute & piccolo. I have a Koregelos silver flute (cylindrical bore) and a JP Hardy wood piccolo (conical bore). I have no problems switching between the two and often play both during the same piece. Minor adjustments in the way I play each have be made, but it isn't a problem by any means.
