Pretend like you're the only one in the room.
Relax.
Just play like you play when you practice.
Except don't screw up, because all those people are watching you!!! CHOKE CHOKE!!

there is really no solution to stop being nervous, but i would suggest to get to know the people that your having trouble playing in front of. No one expects you to be perfect just try your best. If all else fails then just picture them in there underwear. lol

Make sure you know whatever you're going to play really well before you play it in public. I know that sounds obvious but there's nothing worse than not being confident about a piece and having to play it infront of people. Also, just keep going. If you screw up a high not or something, don't worry about it!

Also try just watching the director and you music at all times, never ever look at the croud and try not to listen to them.

I'd like to emphasize not looking at the crowd, that's just insane! But I do recomend practicing with your friends or classmates(if you're still in school). I hate quoting my band teacher, but "If you can play in front of your peers, you can play in front of anybody." [I hope he doesn't see this]

If you can bury yourself in the sheet music even if you know it by heart it might help. I was always greatful when the flood lights were on me because I couldn't see the crowd. If people don't like the way you play something I bet they can't even play an instrument and if you screw up on something hard first don't make any faces just keep going as if it was written that way and second if anyone in the audience plays flute they will have respect for you that you played that hard piece (or hard section) in front of people. I usually sweat a lot and pretend I am reading the music intensely (even though I always memorize it):)

I play in a small woodwind ensemble of senior citizens. Yes, we goof up. Remember the audience does not have the music in front of them and most of the time they will never know you made a mistake if you don't show it. Also, remember most of the time your audience is rooting for you, so they will forgive a mistake.

Hi,
I have been playing since I was six years old. that was almost forty years ago. I still get nervous! But, I have realized that after the first fifteen minutes I calm down. A recital I played at when I was younger traumatized me for life. I had not practiced with my accompanist. She was in one key, I was in another. The whole thing was a disaster. It has haunted me ever since. I am very phobic about practicing with my group, or when I solo, I play play play right up to the performance.
Here are a few do's and don'ts
1. Don't forget to warm-up!
2. Don't play in the wind.
2a Don't play when it too cold. You ever see the idiot
with his toungue stuck to a frozen pipe? That was me!
3. Keep your flute swabbed & clean(Especially the head).
4. Keep your flute as close to your body temperature. (You
can really go sharp or flat as your silver flute
expands and contracts).
5. When I start, I like to play something very deep one of
my old favorites, but not too technical until I calm
down.
6. Find one or two people in the audience and make love to
them with your music. (You'll be surprised at how well
this one works.
7. Don't let your reach exceed your grasp! Only only only
play music that you are so good at that you can do it
as an art form. Something that you can contribute to.
Any idiot can butcher a song, but you must strive to be
an Artist!
8. Oh yeah... Only play music that you like. If you are
only playing because it was forced on you, you will
never be able to put your heart and soul into it.
If anyone wants to hook up, drop me a line at my E-Mail. You see, I win by default. I am a master at what I do, because I've simply screwed up enough times ;-)

To tell you the truth, when you're playing in front of people, or auditioning for something, you are always going to be nervous on some level...but you cant let people make you nervous. You just can't think about the people. Don't pay attention to them, just focus on your music and tune everything else out.
