Author: Casey

I just brought my first flute and had my teacher look at it she said that it was fine and that it was in pitch but i'm looking for a good way where i can start and not get upset if i don't get it. Any advise??

1. Practice every day, even if you don't feel like it. Even ten minutes would be great.
2. Do lots of long tones. Keep your pitch steady
3. Having enough air support at this point is difficult, so focus on how you breath. Make sure you're filling your longs up completely, and not taking short shallow breaths. Your shoulders should -not- move up when you take a breath. If you stand against a wall, this makes that impossible so it almost forces you to breathe correctly. Don't get discouraged if you get dizzy from lack of air. It happens to nearly everyone, including me, when I started (one time I fell over, I was so dizzy, haha).
4. Eventually it will all click and you'll feel (hopefully!) at home on the flute.

as said in the last post, you should practice playing everyday. to breath deeply, you should take a small piece of tissue paper and hold in on the wall with your hand. then, position your mouth the way you would on the flute, and blow for as long as you can. do this often (before you practice). when you take deep breathes, take in as much air as possible.

Like Marielle and Emily said: Practice.
If you do conserts (i know my school does twice a year) and you are nervous, just practice more often and before the consert, take deep breaths.
While playing the flute, breath through your diafram (I don't think i spelled that right...).
Hope this helps you.
