If you want to play a piccilo and you already play the flute, you must have AT LEAST 5-6 years of practice.
If you don't play the flute and want to play the piccilo, I suggest you pick up the flute.
TRUST ME:)

IMHO, with so many individual factors to consider, a blanket statement such as this is not reasonable. I've known many piccolo players who started with far less flute experience. Motivation, a good teacher, and regular practice can matter more than than simply how long one has been playing.
As for the second statement, for various reasons it is generally recommended to begin on flute rather than starting with the piccolo.

I agree with Dori. It's amazing the opinions people come up with on here about the flute.

just wondering but who told you that people need 5-6 years of flute to play picc? there is a girl in my section that i taught to play flute less than a year ago and i'm going to put her on picc for this year's marching season. it all depends on the person, there is no set number of years for any instrument to be able to move on to the specialty instruments. i've even known a girl to not play flute at all but was at an almost professional level on picc.

You dont neccessilary need 5-6 years of experience on flute to play the piccolo. I've been playing flute for a year and my band director jus switched me to piccolo about a month ago. It all depends on the individual and if their willing to learn and practice and if their dedicated enough it comes with ease.
