There are different techniques for playing the different registers. How high can you play?

i purchased a $50 clarinet from a friend. and you get what you pay for. to reach high notes, the tendency for beginners is to bite harder, because thats what you did to cross the break(Bb-B). but when you go higher, don't clench harder, this will cut off the note. try to not change your embouchure. you will most likely have to increase pressure onto the reed, which is normal, but never bite. and make sure your embouchure is tight, i don't mean to clench together, but for it to be firm. you don't want your reed to sit on your bottom lip not tight across, it's better to have it firm, that way the reed can vibrate freely. exercising these will not work instantly, you'll need practise as well. one tip you can do in warm-ups and if you dot hem, cool-downs, is long tones. play a note that is not the top of your range, for about 16 beats at 60. then go up a semi-tone or a whole tone if you prefer. and then play for another 16 beats at 60. after a while of these long tones, you'll notice better tone, and an increased range. when you first play these notes, they might come out as a squeal, but be patient and the more times you play this and settle your embouchure, these notes will come easier and smoother. also, to hit altissimo notes, you should vocalize your notes. this will open your airways and let air to stream through your oral cavity smoother and quicker, which is what you need for these high notes. hope this helps.

I liked your letter Theboy. I am wondering about the squeaking I get when moving into the upper register. I have a wood selmer clarinet and use a #2 reed. How do I get the squeak out? It is driving me nuts. Thanks. Shelia
