I play bassoon, and my reed is starting to smell weird. Not that i have bad breath or anything, but I do wash it after almost every time i play. Is there anything i could do? Even after i wash it, it still smells weird. Ewww. Sorry if this grosses you out =P but help IS appreciated.

I play saxophone and when I purchase a reed i usually buy several of them since i know i will need them in the future.I would throw that dirty reed away it could possibly
make you sick because of bacteria build-up.Your ready for a new reed.Hope this helps you.

oh...ok thanks, but i'm trying to prevent from buying too many reeds because they're so expensive! ones i see are 15 to 17 Canadian...unlike sax reeds =P which cost only about 1.50 Canadian..

bassoon reeds are expensive, because normally bassoon players make them thereselves...
saxophone and clarinet reeds are bought, hobo and bassoon reeds are made by the player. Try to learn it somewhere!

this is a way me and my fellow double reeds players do. first wet your reed.then,u get a piece of yamaha cleaning paper or rice paper, fold it a few times on the angle so it becomes a narrow triangle . next, slip da triangle shape paper all the way into your reed until it cant go in any more. then press ur reed together and form a sandwich with the rice paper in the middle. slowy slip back the rice paper out again and u will see slimy orangy dirt on the rice paper. do this a couple of times and then u wash your reed.
this is best done after u finish your pracice. there are also some reed cleaning equipments u can buy from charles double reed company and other music company but they will cost u.
